Mount Agung Bali

December 7, 2009

On April 5th, I and three of my friends did a climb to Mount Agung. The height is about 3.142 above the sea level. It is the highest mount in Bali. There are three starting points. The first is via Besakih Temple, the second is via Pura Pasar Agung and the third via Budakeling (not common).

To Besakih Temple in the north, it is  about 26 kms from Denpasar and takes about more or less 2 hours with car or motor bike. Pura Besakih used to be the very famous starting point, however starting on May 2009 the goverment prohibit the climbing without a local guide, due to some cases of climbers lost and found dead during the climbing, even some of them were not found until now. Going via this route (Besakih) is longer but one can enjoy the excellent view along the way. It takes about 10 to 12 hours. I never experienced this route. However if you wish to go via Besakih at least prepare about USD $ 40.00 for a local guide. Most climbers said this route is more excellent and challenging.

Another way is via Pura Pasar Agung, this starting point is located in Karangasem about 3 hours to the north-east of Denpasar with car or motor bike. This route is the shortest way to get to the top compared to via Besakih. It takes only about 3-4 hours to get to the top. I and my friend went up via this route. The best time to climb ( if you climb slow) is in the evening. At the begining of the climbing you will pass the Pura Pasar Agung (do not forget to pray first at the Pura just to show respect), and then you will pass a forest (light forest) with slippery small road about 1 hours, and the rest is rocky path. About 4 kms to the top, there’s no more trees only rocks.

Please remember : do not bring any food contains “beef” (cow is considered as a holy animal in Bali.)

If you want to travel alone or with your friend, you can hire a bike or car. You can hire a bike in Kuta or Sanur for only around USD $ 5  per day, or a car around max. USD $ 30 per day (avanza) without driver (normal cost), usually including Insurance.

For more information , please do not hesitate to email me at even only to ask a questions, i would be happy to assist :)!! Bon Voyages
